Education, employment and research will lead the growth of the poultry sector

The poultry sector has grown rapidly over the past decade, expanding faster than any other animal production sector and contributing significantly to global nutrition and food security.

Between 2014 and 2024, an additional 4 kg of poultry meat and 31 eggs became available per person worldwide. However, the industry faces major challenges, including feeding 1.5 billion more people by 2050, improving productivity, ensuring animal welfare, reducing environmental impact, and attracting workers.

These challenges can be addressed through three main pillars: Education, Employment, and Research, supported by the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

What is Artificial Intelligence?

AI aims to create systems that can learn from experience and apply knowledge to different situations. A key area of AI is Machine Learning, which analyzes large amounts of data to identify patterns and make predictions.

In poultry production, AI is already being used to monitor bird health, detect behaviors, and predict growth performance. Since much industry data is still collected manually, digital transformation through sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies is essential for developing Poultry 4.0.

Education

Continuous education is becoming increasingly important as technology and research advance quickly. AI-based learning tools can personalize education and improve training for poultry professionals.

Communication skills are also essential. Industry discussions with consumers and society often involve emotions as much as science, making effective communication a key requirement for the future.

Employment

The poultry sector faces challenges in recruiting workers, increasing the need for automation and digital technologies. Systems such as automated bird weighing can improve accuracy, reduce stress on animals, and support better flock management.

AI is expected to enhance human work rather than replace it, creating a future where humans and machines work together.

Research

AI is becoming a major research focus because it can analyze large datasets and reveal new opportunities. Sustainability, antimicrobial resistance, gut health, and reducing environmental impact are key priorities.

AI can speed up the development of innovative products and technologies that improve bird health, productivity, and environmental performance.
