The European Union, through the Directorate General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), conducted an audit in the U.S. from April 20–30 focused on the U.S. response and management of HPAI, particularly within primary breeding operations (day-old chicks and hatching eggs). These represent a significant portion of live poultry exports to the EU.
USAPEEC participated in the initial portion of the audit through April 23. Overall, the audit activities during this period went well, with strong coordination between industry and government partners and a comprehensive overview provided to the EU delegation.
On April 20, the delegation visited the Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network (GPLN), where detailed discussions were held on HPAI response efforts and the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP), including surveillance, prevention, and control measures.
Subsequent visits included key primary breeding operations and supporting facilities. The delegation visited Cobb-Vantress in Georgia, where they received presentations on company structure, global distribution, traceability, and biosecurity protocols, followed by facility tours.
The audit continued with a visit to Aviagen’s veterinary laboratory in Alabama. There, the EU team reviewed biosecurity measures, compartmentalization protocols, veterinary oversight, and laboratory operations.
Throughout the audit, the EU delegation was provided with insights into U.S. HPAI preparedness, response strategies, and the robustness of the NPIP program. All engagements were productive, and the visits effectively demonstrated the strength of U.S. systems supporting poultry health and export certification.
Overall, the audit progressed smoothly with no issues noted during the portion attended. USAPEEC played an important role in ensuring the audit went smoothly.
