Cobb-Vantress, an American poultry genetics company headquartered in the United States, is one of the world’s leading suppliers of broiler breeding stock, operating in more than 100 countries and serving producers that account for the majority of global broiler production. With a heritage of more than 100 years in poultry breeding and a strong focus on research, data-driven genetic progress, and global technical support, Cobb plays a central role in improving efficiency, productivity, and sustainability across the global poultry industry.
Cobb-Vantress has introduced the Cobb800, a next-generation broiler breeder developed to meet the demands of high-yield, large-scale production systems. According to the company, the new product is the result of decades of genetic selection, supported by the most comprehensive commercial testing programme in Cobb’s history.
The Cobb800 has been developed to deliver improvements in yield, livability and hatchability across a wide range of production environments. Cobb says the bird has been evaluated under real-world commercial conditions, with testing conducted across multiple geographies, management systems and nutritional programmes to validate performance consistency at scale.
Genetic progress
Research and development played a central role in the bird’s development. Dr William Herring, vice president of research and development at Cobb, said the Cobb800 reflects a shift in how genetic progress is tested and delivered.
“This is the most thoroughly evaluated product we have ever developed,” he said. “It has been tested at commercial scale, across diverse production systems, to ensure that genetic gains translate into measurable on-farm performance,” said Herring.
The Cobb800 is also the first product to complete its full development cycle through Cobb’s Proving Grounds platform, which is designed to assess genetic performance under commercial operating conditions. The company says this approach improves the relevance and reliability of performance data for producers.
Cobb800 an addition to Cobb’s portfolio
While introducing the Cobb800, Cobb emphasised that the new product complements its existing portfolio rather than replacing it. The Cobb500 remains the company’s primary solution for small bird markets, where it continues to deliver strong performance and efficiency.
According to Cobb, research and genetic improvement efforts continued across all product lines during the development of the Cobb800. “This programme reflects our commitment to continuous improvement,” said Herring. “Advancing a new product did not come at the expense of our existing lines.”
Cobb positions the Cobb800 as part of a broader strategy to provide producers with data-driven, commercially-validated genetic solutions that can be confidently integrated into modern production systems.
